Training Centre Update – February 2012
At the end of 2011, Graham Douglas and Craig Reid were given the opportunity to work with local schools on the Go4SET scheme as mentors; the project was to provide electricity and heat for their school using a Bio mass plant to be sited at the school. Graham worked with team 1 from the Grove Academy and Craig worked with Morgan Academy and although neither of our teams won the Grove team 2 did come close and team 1 also was mentioned. The main prize was given to Harris Academy for they will now go on to compete for the national prize at hollyrood later this year. The event was a big success and all schools produced excellent Biomass projects. Within January/February all instructors got involved with schools careers evenings some of the schools covered are Grove, Craigie, Morgan, St John’s, Braeview, Madras and also Carnoustie High. There is also a morning event in the Caird Hall for any schools to attend on the 16th, it is hoped to advertise for the 2012 intake in early March applications are available from Security and the Training Centre.
Another year another group of Dundee University students attend the Training Centre on Tuesday afternoons until the April holiday to cover basic engineering skills which includes Lathes, Milling, Fabrication and Hand Skills, this is not just an opportunity for the students to pick up some practical skills but also for 3rd year apprentices to pass on their skills. |
